While Sunbathers Fled Danger, Popular Image Captures Rescuer Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the famous coast as her own backyard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected cracking sounds reverberating around the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. She left her apartment, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. Their expressions she saw signaled something was wrong.

Positioned on the street, speaking to a duo who had run up the slope still dripping wet, she became aware of someone approaching behind her. This turned out to be a lifeguard, running at full speed to Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I spotted this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. It was just him moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to escape from, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He was sprinting into something that certainly every fibre in your being would signal you to move in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally full throttle sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism Amidst Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many acts of heroism in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, hurried from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and ambulance crews attending to many those hurt.

Local Reaction and Support

Doolan’s account was just one of many to be shared by the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the incident transforming into a temporary medical station. It was shared that colleagues were also seen responding bravely, including entering the surf to save people in distress.

After the tragedy, statements of support were shared. One post conveyed appreciation for the responders who showed that “kindness will always overcome hatred”.

The squad of lifeguards later shared a statement, noting they were “processing what happened”.

“Thank you all for your supportive sentiments and solidarity. We are touched by the compassion shown towards our team,” the team stated. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many permanent lifeguards, stated that the staff performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting started until late that night.

“People have shared so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help assist the injured is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“These individuals demonstrate selflessness every day in ensuring our internationally renowned shores safe for the public, but what we witnessed on that day should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the terror of this heinous terrorist attack, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
