The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
