New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that sparked debate in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on our family's safety and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will always live a part of me and the work I do," he said.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

However his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for public city functions, and championed a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria home.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
