The Long-Awaited Lesson on Modding: Warframe's New Quest Rights a Wrong
The popular online game known as Warframe, a title where you can feed yourself to a giant mouth and drive a motorcycle in the year 1999, has launched a new update. This latest expansion exemplifies the distinctive charm that has come to define Warframe in recent years.
This expansion, made available this week, adds a fungus-inspired character that does a little dance, along with a brand-new biome to discover. However, it also revisits core concepts, with another quest geared at making sure this complex, vast long-running online game is understandable by new players.
A Quest Called "The Teacher"
Titled âThe Teacher,â this is the highly anticipated mission that instructs Warframe players on how to use one of the game's most basic â yet most intricate systems: modding.
In Warframe, mods are augments that can be added to your character or your weapons to enhance their abilities. These can be simple (increase damage or speed up reload rate) to the incredibly intricate. Content creators often produce extensive guides about idealized builds that use powerful mods in combination to create devastating effects.
âI think a lot of people were maybe getting into the early game, seeing mods, not really understanding it,â explained a key developer. âWe believed it was crucial, at the end of the quest, for players to think, âHey, modding is cool. I want to try more of this.ââ
A Joint Development
âThe Teacherâ was developed in a collaboration between the original developers, who handled the story elements, and a supporting studio, who designed the mission, which will appear early in the game.
In the quest, the player is asked to retrieve a new segment for their spaceship, but theyâre confronted by a formidable foe called Teshin, who takes away the playerâs abilities and close-combat arms, and compels them to use the mod system to effectively show its potential.
Several developers were longtime players, but some were newcomers, according to a lead designer. This fresh viewpoint that was essential.
âThe first thing we did was basically sit behind them and have them experience the introduction and take prodigious notes on all points of confusion,â the designer said. Introductory tutorials presented the mod system. But the team noted that they didnât work on everyone.
âCertain players missed fundamental guidance where the game highlights it saying put the mod in the slot,â he said.
Closing an Important Loop
Warframeâs mods allow players to create stupidly powerful synergies that fill the display with damage values. But "The Teacher" focuses on different aspects. There will be some long-time players who wish the quest was geared more towards their needs, like optimizing for endgame challenges. But it became clear that the mission addresses a genuine oversight for newcomers â and that executing this is quite complex.
âNumerous subtle adjustments and background details there to just sort of show you what it can do rather than explain it outright,â the designer said. For example, one of the mission's objectives is to show how mods can create powerful elemental status effects; in this case, Magnetic damage that eats chunks out of enemy shields.
âWe had to change the weapon to be a burst-fire weapon, because it better demonstrates the effect frequency,â the designer said. âHowever, the goal isn't to explicitly tell players, 'with a basic modification, you only got a few percentage chance to trigger a special damage type.' How can you teach this mechanic effectively?â
Experienced players will instinctively look for that kind of weapon effect and grasp their function, but new players have to be taught to pay attention to these things.
âThis type of design work that we've had to worry about as much just because that hasn't been our focus,â said a story developer. âBut part of it not being our focus that players weren't properly taught the modding system.â
Significant Investment
âA tremendous amount of work is required for just making a seemingly straightforward quest that â frankly â you can complete quickly,â said the designer. âYet it represents extensive development for many team members.â
The designer was visibly glowing with excitement over being able to work on a game that he loves â and to craft a mission for one of his favorite characters.
âI'm a huge fan of Teshin,â he said. âHe embodies everything my younger self found awesome.â
Streamlining the Beginning
In the 12 years since its release, Warframe has been in a ongoing struggle with its own new user introduction. There are lots of complex systems that players donât need to worry about â and won't encounter until hours into the game. And others, like modding, that scale in complexity depending on your level of engagement. A previous patch streamlined the early game so that players could reach Warframeâs mind-bending plot developments with reduced repetitive play up front.
With âThe Teacher,â itâs clear that the developers are reinforcing their dedication to make sure Warframeâs initial hours evolves beyond its origins. New players can get their foot in the door â even if they miss the menu prompts.
