Prison Shock: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars

He fought the law and the law prevailed.

Two months after receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” the nation's political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The found-guilty instigator – who's been under house arrest in his residence while a series of court processes and challenges proceed – is largely predicted to be jailed in the coming days, during mounting speculation that he will be transferred to a well-known high-security facility.

Previous Statements on Prisoners

Throughout Bolsonaro’s long political career, the far-right ex- soldier displayed minimal sympathy for the country's prison population.

“Why should we offer those scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to wind up there, you simply need is not rape, kidnap or rob.”

Prison Destination Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, several of whom this week toured the prison in an obvious bid to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, stated he anticipated the elderly politician to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal problems – the outcome of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – signified it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is extremely serious. He will not be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the condition of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells containing 40 inmates: “It's almost one square metre per prisoner.

“We conversed to the inmates and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the horrible meals,” remarked the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

He is not the sole person voicing opinions ahead of the former president’s predicted incarceration.

Authoring in a leading newspaper, one more backer, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and alleged Brazil was about to see “the greatest unfairness in its record”.

“It is an unfairness that erodes the hearts of many Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided Public Response

This could be accurate due to the substantial support Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. But his expected incarceration has also warmed the feelings of many others who believe he should be jailed for planning to block the incoming president from taking power – and additionally conspiring to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a politician for the current administration's political party, stated: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. No one wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get proper handling – but dignified care in prison. He must not carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the harsh handling of prisoners, had abruptly woken up to their privileges. “Recently has the far-right – which has consistently argued that basic rights should not be for lawbreakers – chosen to visit a prison to discover what conditions are actually like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, degrading treatment”.

Possible Jail Facilities

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand prisoners, his probable location seems to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “special” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are far more adequate than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the spectacular leader's home, approximately a short distance away.

According to information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – about the dimensions of two parking spaces – and contains a 12 square meter restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot veranda. “He could be allowed to have a TV and even a minibar in his cell as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report stated.

Partisan Responses

He criticized the talked-about proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a form of revenge” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his future in the {
