Typically, recap episodes face criticism from viewers as a needless waste of time, or sometimes accepted as essential for shows during the period of regular broadcasts. However, this wasn't the case, and Avatar: The Last Airbender demonstrated this with "The Ember Island Players," a beloved installment from its final season now being granted a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair release.

Highlights of the special release

The complete Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender set was unveiled recently. Containing five separate collections, and while one titled "My Cabbages!" is an admittedly funny homage to Avatar's beloved recurring figure, the remaining sets seem somewhat uninspired, aside from one remarkable entry: "The Ember Island Players."

Inspired by installment 17 from season 3 of the beloved series, this special set includes these particular cards:

• 1x Phantasmal Image represented as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
• 1x Braid of Fire
• 1x Cursed Mirror
• 1x Mask of Memory
• 1x Thespian's Stage

Why this segment remains memorable

Fans of the show fondly remember this episode, which functioned as a review of the protagonist Aang and his friends' adventure before the series' finale. Different from other recap episodes, or compilation episodes, "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated from financial limitations or scheduling problems. The show's makers genuinely intended to give fans a moment to revisit the overall plot, but they decided to approach it inventively.

Throughout the segment, the crew view a theatrical performance inspired by their journeys on a stage on Ember Island, titled The Boy in the Iceberg. The whole thing is wildly exaggerated, melodramatic, and utterly comical. It excels as it plays with the heroes' understanding of themselves, setting them against against how the world (and notably the Fire Nation) sees them. It has an ideal level of introspective humor, and it becomes possibly the best adaptation of Avatar available to date.

Appeal and pricing

Regarding worth, this represents an excellent Secret Lair because of one major element: Braid of Fire. This particular card sells between $20 and $40 on various platforms at the time of writing, and for $29.99 you can snag the full set, or $39.99 for the foil version.

Magic: The Gathering's Avatar: The Last Airbender edition is available for advance previews beginning November 14 and debuts internationally on Nov. 21.
