New York Unveils Online Platform for Citizens to Report Immigration Footage After Arrests of 4 US Citizens

New York state AG has launched a fresh digital platform encouraging residents to provide images and footage of immigration raids throughout New York. This action follows a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering widespread demonstrations.

US Citizens Arrested In Raid

A lawmaker disclosed during a news conference that four US citizens were detained and held for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations broke out in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Every New Yorker deserves to exist without intimidation," the attorney general wrote in a announcement.

"For those who saw and captured ICE activity recently, I encourage you to provide that material with us. We are dedicated to examining these accounts and evaluating any wrongdoings."

Portal Features

The platform provides spaces to submit images and video footage of the incident, as well as a section to indicate location information. Before submitting, users must check a box that confirms that "the office could utilize any materials, images, or footage in a public document, including in a legal proceeding or government document."

Information about the ICE Action

The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say featured more than 50 ICE personnel, occurred in a famous neighborhood of the city where fake purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded en masse – often to tourists.

Videos of the operation show several masked and armed personnel zip-tying and detaining a person, and pushing back bystanders. Crowds of residents pursued the agents along the roads. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.

Leadership Statements

At a midweek briefing held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, the congressman, a Democratic representative, announced that four nationals were detained by ICE for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where four American citizens should be taken for unjustly." He said the persons were let go on Wednesday with no legal action taken.

"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman stated. "This represents a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is simply a justification to incite violence for the government to bring in the armed forces to halt conflict that they initiated."

Broad Criticism

Outrage over the immigration operation rapidly grew – all three political contenders condemned the operation, as did the state leader.

"Yet again, the Trump administration selects heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate stated.

The city's immigrant rights groups expressed outrage also.

"Federal officers targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and tactical gear to target street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had no relation to public safety and was entirely about frightening communities and neighborhoods," stated the head of a advocacy group.

ICE Policies

Official guidelines bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has stated it does not arrest or detain US citizens. However, external research has found that more than 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents since the beginning of the existing leadership.

Current Situation

Immigration operations have been becoming more common in the state and nationwide this year.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the existing leadership. Rallies opposing ICE are widespread along with allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.

Latest, a submission filed by legal entities alleged inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
