Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
