Israelis commemorate second remembrance of October 7th attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations advance
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The assault saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state commemorations until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an evening round of negotiations commenced at 7 PM local time.
The source said the earlier meeting finished without concrete outcomes, amid differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but noted that mediators are making efforts to close the gaps between the both parties.
Critical Points in Talks
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Future management of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose family member endured the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home now and until every captive return not a single person will feel safe."
"When we see all home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their backing for the families of the captives. Israel states forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "We must do every compromise required for the hostages to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of Nova festival, grieving people came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of that day in the western district, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"As the evening comes, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.
"My family are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my little child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."
Health Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had received the bodies of several people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of the city reported two more fatalities had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south region, medics reported.
