Two students describe their stories of life at university.

One university attendee spent most of his freshers' week scrolling through online platforms, seeing content about other students' fun nights out.

"I stayed indoors," Robert explains, depicting those days as the loneliest time of his life.

Robert's flatmates seldom socialized, and his studies didn't appear especially friendly.

Although he tried by attending trial events for different clubs, he didn't discover people he connected with.

"I gradually lost my self-esteem," he says. "I felt like others weren't interested to be friends with me, or they weren't fond of me."

Social Media Comparisons

At first, Robert wasn't considering of studying at university and had a job offer for following college.

But then he observed his peers living it up as college students online.

"When you must rise for employment on weekdays at nine in the morning and you notice others went out on midweek, you begin believing others have it better," Robert explains.

College Anticipations

TV shows and social media can glorify the idea of college existence.

Lots of people arrive at college with strong assumptions for what they imagine could be the most wonderful time of their lives.

Various learners begin their studies with "idealistic views," notes a support services coordinator.

Survey Findings

  • Through surveys of freshers in their first week, students' biggest concern was fitting in and feeling included
  • Additional research conducted by analysts, nearly one-fifth of attendees said they were without companions at university
  • 37% said they worried daily or weekly about making friends

Personal Journeys

A different attendee's TikTok feed was filled with content of students enjoying themselves while cohabitating in university housing.

However when she relocated from her hometown to university to learn reporting, she found orientation period "daunting" because of the substance involvement it involved.

She abstains from alcohol and had avoided party scenes before.

"I did spend considerable time initially inside my accommodation," she says. "I just felt slightly disconnected."

Emotional Wellbeing Factors

Through current studies of numerous college learners, a significant portion mentioned they contemplated leaving university.

The most common reason was psychological wellbeing, followed by economic considerations.

"Concern over these multiple factors is massively common, and normal," explains a counselling expert.

Discovering Answers

Over periods, Robert, Alisha and Christina all found their feet and developed friendships.

Alisha made friends through her course and using online platforms, while Christina felt happier when she could to share accommodation with peers.

Useful Suggestions

Regarding his experience, currently in his mid-twenties and in his last year, it was participating in theater activities and getting a part-time job that assisted in relationship building.

The suggested approach to first-year students struggling to socialize is to simply leave your accommodation and participate in group trial sessions.

"Subsequent to periods of regular attendance, people recognise your face," he explains, "you notice their presence, and friendships begin forming."
