England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing echoes their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a convincing victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
