Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria

Security breach at educational facility
Educational institutions in Nigeria's northern region have become frequent targets for armed groups

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The armed faction stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.

The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.

Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to generate terror.

Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.

Security crisis in the northern regions of Nigeria has worsened considerably in recent months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the violence.
