Condemnation Surges as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Criticism
Figures from both sides of the political aisle and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
“What a vile and vile statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the statements. She pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged others in his party to defend the comments.
Reiner's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a past conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
