Many in Cameroon show outrage that Paul Biya has won an eighth term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has declared that opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over accusations that he provoked "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

No fewer than four demonstrators have been lost their lives during confrontations between police and military and opposition supporters since Cameroon's election on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 obtaining an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he won the election, a statement disputed by the governing party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).

Aggressive responses by security personnel on demonstrators have alarmed the global community, with the United Nations, African Union and EU demanding moderation.

Official's Accusations

Recently, the interior minister alleged Tchiroma Bakary of coordinating what he labeled "unauthorized" protests causing the loss of lives, and also condemned him for announcing success in the presidential race.

He added that Tchiroma Bakary's "co-conspirators behind an subversive plot" will also face legal action.

Vote Outcome

Paul Biya, who assumed office in 1982 and is now the oldest serving president, obtained the October 12 vote with over half of the vote, compared to a significant minority for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.

Leader's Stance

Issa Tchiroma is yet to respond to the official announcement to bring him to court, but he had previously announced that he would not accept a stolen vote - and that he was undaunted of being taken into custody.

Following the vote count, he said that armed men shot on demonstrators gathered near his residence in Garoua, killing at least two civilians.

Inquiry Launched

On Tuesday, the interior minister announced that an inquiry would be initiated into clashes surrounding the publication of the poll figures.

"Throughout the violence, some of the criminals were killed," he commented, without giving a specific number of protesters who have been killed in the incidents.

Nji added that multiple officers of the security forces also suffered major harm.

Current Situation

Although the interior minister asserted the state of affairs nationwide was now under control, demonstrators continue to protest in various areas of the country, especially in Douala and Garoua, where demonstrators mounted barricades on that day, and burnt tires on the roads.

Experts warn that the election-related unrest could lead the country into a governmental instability.
