On the eve of his six-year milestone at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is directly connected to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge

The former Arsenal captain took over on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an FA Cup victory within months. However, that early success remains his only major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Absolutely,” the manager said when questioned about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And numerous factors need to fall into place in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal faced immediately following his appointment was announced.

Present Challenges

Given that chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal risk losing top spot in the Premier League for the first time. This comes despite Arteta presiding over a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks since the start of last season.

He currently has a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that results must come sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, stressing the ongoing need to justify his role. “In my view a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He added, commending the unwavering support from the hierarchy, yet identifying the players' commitment as the key factor. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal approaches the Everton match coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that is likely to see him miss action for several weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Even with the fitness woes and the intense pressure, Arteta is confident the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

Arteta highlighted the team's performances as evidence of progress. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And we want to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
